23 Jul San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge
While most people recognize the famous bridge that spans the San Francisco Bay, not as many men and women know about its own history. Though it was once a recently finished happening, the bridge has been around now for 8 decades. The people who assembled it, seeing it grow to become a shape spanning the bay’s skyline, are all gone.
When it was discussed, the cost for the bridge was. Exorbitant and people weren’t sure where the money would come in to pay for it. What ended up covering the cost is a rather remarkable story in and of itself. Individuals residing in San Francisco and the surrounding area were asked this: Should something goes wrong with the bridge, or if it were somehow ruined before it had been paid off, could they be inclined to place liens on their own homes to pay for it? They consented, and the project went.
The bridge was begun in January of 1933, and four Decades later, In May of 1937, it officially opened, a workable solution for the town’s growing traffic congestion issues. The bridge remains an engineering marvel, the burden of it being supported by wires that run up and over the legendary orange towers. It had been crafted with movement in your mind, able to move up to 10 feet downwards, or 6 feet in another direction, and one travels 1.7 miles when going over it.
Since it was being constructed during the famous depression of the 1930s, work was scarce and finding work with good pay was a prize to come by. Employees on the bridge were becoming paid around $11/day, a fantastic salary at the moment, but the work was perilous and required strict attention to stay secure at work. A safety net was installed with the express purpose of grabbing anyone that fell, a supply which ended up saving 19 lives. (Since the construction is so high over the water, anybody falling from the bridge will likely not survive. The force of this impact is in comparison to a car hitting a brick wall at a rate of 80 mph.) Dangerous job aside, though, people would hang out in the construction site, cooking their food, waiting for an individual working over to drop in hopes of becoming that person’s job. The large steel wires that hold the bridge up are 3 ft in diameter. And, though they seem like a solid piece of steel in the outside, they’re actually assembled of 27,572 individual wires bundled together and covered with an outside plate of steel. Every one of those huge main cables is 7,650 feet long. And, since it’s constructed from steel and constructed in an environment subjected to salt and water, the bridge requires continuous upkeep. Now, over 100 individuals work full-time at the bridge enforcing security and performing the essential care to ensure its longevity by preventing rust.
And what about its own colour? During planning, black and Gray were suggested options, and the navy was really hoping that the bridge would be painted with black and yellow stripes. (Hello ugly finished product!) The color that has been selected, however, came around as a bit of fortuitous happenstance. The primer paint that was used gave the steel an orange color, a color which complemented the surrounding area and helped make the bridge visible in fog. So, ultimately they went with orange crimson, and it stuck.
