The American Dream

Yes we can!

America is home to lots of tourist attractions, but a favorite one would surely be that the White House. This is the case due to its historic significance and what it signifies. The women and men who’ve lived in that home have been individuals whose lifestyles are in the spotlight as they try to become exemplary role models to our nation and the world.

Perhaps no government has made the White House an accessible location to most Americans in the same manner the Obamas did. Sure, previous administrations were gracious and comprehended that they represented the American men and women. But Barack and Michelle Obama opened up that in a whole new way as they hosted hip hop dancing at the White House, planted vegetables, also allow woman scouts sleep on the yard at the nation’s capitol. They had been purposefully concentrated on making it feel as though it was a house for all of the American people.

After Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States, he became the first African American to hold that office. It was a moment he had worked toward and prepared for. His own life experience made it possible for him to achieve and work with individuals from all walks of life, and the colour of his skin made it possible for him to spot minorities because he’d walked in their shoes.

His parents met and married in Hawaii, though they did not end up staying together. Barack’s father ultimately returned to his homeland in Africa, also Barack remained in the states with his own mother. His mother later married an undercover, and the small family ended up living in Indonesia for many years. That experience made it possible for Barack to personally watch poverty, people begging for basic essentials, and passing.

It was while he was in Indonesia that he remembers pondering race for the very first time. This came about because he watched magazine ads targeted to individuals of color, advertising mediums to lighten skin colour as a desirable thing. He’d never actually considered the colour of his skin before or what it intended. This would be something he would continue to consider during his adolescence as he attempted to determine his identity and find a spot where he believed he match in. What did it mean to be black, and did he identify with black culture–or white culture?

All these factors: his race and life experiences–which range from seeing poverty firsthand to graduating from Harvard Law School with honors–really prepared him for the work that lay ahead. Because he’d wide-ranging actual life experience, he had a special ability to connect with people in a variety of circumstances, and that he was passionate about making life better for others through working together. And when he spoke at the Democratic Convention in Boston in 2004, he highlighted that we’re not the labels that divide us rather, we are fellow Americans residing in the United States of America.

While you could say several things about Obama, people occasionally remark on his decorum–how he appears to stay trendy, level-headed, and serene regardless of the circumstance. His reply to this observation? “I am somebody who never believes the hype when things are going good, and doesn’t despair when things do not work out of your way.” Is not that sound advice for all of us as we browse the ups and downs which are an inevitable part of life?

In the wake of Donald Trump’s election, the nation was in an uproar that subjected nasty bias, misogyny, and racial discrimination. When asked if he felt as though this signaled a step back from all of the progress made in the last several decades, he said he didn’t think that way. And then, he concluded that idea by saying this: “The struggle must be vigilant on behalf of kindness and courtesy and tolerance and fairness and equality — that’s a day-to-day thing that each of us are responsible for.” As we attempt to dwell these characteristics in our unique lives, we invite greater compassion and love into the world.

Learning about our background is one thing that many Americans enjoy. It’s one of the reasons why tours featuring historic places are so common. Being able to visit areas where significant events happened invites introspection and gratitude as we believe the legacy that’s been handed down to us from past generations.
