08 Jun Wisdom from Michael Jordan
When you talk about basketball legends, Michael Jordan was maybe the best of time. Anyone who has seen what he could do with a basketball can not help but be in awe of his ability and skill. But it was not something that just happened. While he is definitely a sports superstar, he also did not get that reputation by coming out and playing an ordinary game of ball.
When you learn about a person, you have the chance to learn what philosophies they embrace, and Michael is no exclusion. While one can glean many life lessons from his story, we have chosen to focus on four.
First, focus on the love of the game. When he was asked what advice he might give to parents that had kids playing basketball, he responded by simply saying, “Let them just enjoy the game.” If your kid has a love of this sport, that will fuel their desire to continue playing. As they perform frequently, they will understand and improve. Allowing them to follow what they’re passionate about is a natural way for them to advance and be better because they pursue what they like.
Secondly, learn from the setbacks. He didn’t become Michael Jordan without putting in the time to hone his abilities. In fact, he tried out for the varsity basketball team as a sophomore in high school and did not make it. He was ruined, but received sage advice from his mom: “Use that power to prove to your mentor and to your peers and your classmates that they made a mistake.” And he did. Later on, Phil Jackson, who coached Jordan for several seasons, spoke about Michael’s devotion to rising in the face of challenges. He spoke about how Jordan was not a great offensive shooter in the start of his career, and that his defense was not the most powerful aspect of his game, either. But that didn’t get Michael down. Instead, Jordan identified his weaknesses and decided he would make them his strong points. And that is exactly what he did.
Third, be a positive influence. Among the touching moments in the documentary “Michael Jordan to the Max” is when he talks about his father. He said, “Sometimes [at a game] I’ll see a father and son, and sometimes I wonder if they know how much I’d love to be them.” His dad was a powerful role model for him a prominent figure in his life. And when his father died, Jordan said he saw it as a blessing. He reflected, “I was fortunate that he had been there when I needed him, that he would impact my life to look at situations that I utilize to make my conclusions to this day. Some kids never have this. Sure, I’d love to have him today, but folks are put on this earth for a reason, and you also utilize the time that you’re here. You never know when that is gonna be removed from you; that is one thing that he taught me. But while they are here, they ought to create an impact on a person’s life, and he left an effect on my life.”
And lastly, work hard. When he had been operating on his baseball career (that was pretty short-lived), Sports Illustrated said that he was an embarrassment to the game. But he worked hard in the game. He had been the first to arrive every morning, and also the last to depart at night, devoted to improving his talent. Along with that drive, endurance and focus are traits that define him.
Those people that are improving children would like to instill these qualities into our youth, regardless of whether they play at a professional league. Youth athletics are a wonderful way that kids can learn these very same classes: love the sport, learn from the reverses, be an influence for good, and work hard. And then? Well, let everything else fall into place.
